La econom\u00eda se encuentra bien, los precios del petr\u00f3leo est\u00e1n bajos y el d\u00e9ficit fiscal del gobierno federal no les importaba mucho a los ciudadanos. Reagan era un Presidente popular y su personalidad hacia que se conectara f\u00e1cilmente con el ciudadano promedio. Parte de la popularidad del Presidente radicaba en haber devuelto a Norteam\u00e9rica el sentido de potencia militar que era respetada por el resto del mundo, y Reagan se cuidaba mucho de que esa percepci\u00f3n continuara. En octubre de 1983 terroristas asesinan 241 infantes de marina en Beirut. A los pocos d\u00edas Reagan ordena la invasi\u00f3n de Grenada con el fin de salvar la vida de un grupo de estudiantes norteamericanos que se encontraban en eventual peligro por parte del gobierno de izquierda que hab\u00eda subido al poder de la isla. Con ese hecho el prestigio militar de Norteam\u00e9rica hab\u00eda sido devuelto ante la opini\u00f3n p\u00fablica. Era dif\u00edcil enfrentar electoralmente a Reagan, pues no solo contaba con altos niveles de popularidad, sino que era un hombre demasiado h\u00e1bil para comunicar y sintonizarse con el norteamericano promedio. Los dem\u00f3cratas eligieron como candidato al exvicepresidente Walter Mondale. La campa\u00f1a dem\u00f3crata eligi\u00f3, por primera vez en la historia, a una mujer como formula: la representante por New York, Geraldine Ferraro, lamentablemente, los medios de comunicaci\u00f3n pusieron sus luces sobre las finanzas del marido y Ferraro estuvo a la defensiva desde el comienzo de la carrera. Otro error, quiz\u00e1s el m\u00e1s grande, fue la propuesta de Mondale de aumentar los impuestos para solucionar el d\u00e9ficit fiscal del gobierno federal, imaginara usted como entender\u00eda el norteamericano la idea de que le subieran los impuestos para solucionar un problema que \u00e9l no ve\u00eda. El slogan de campa\u00f1a de Mondale era \u201cLuchando por su Futuro\u201d. Los spot de los dem\u00f3cratas buscaban mostrar la cara siniestra de la era Reagan. La m\u00fasica hacia recordar a la que utilizaba Nixon para asustar a los votantes con los dem\u00f3cratas, llegando al extremo de mostrar a un padres cavando en su jard\u00edn para hacer un refugio antinuclear. Los anuncios de Mondale se dirigieron a desarrollar tres aspectos que consideraba eran las vulnerabilidades de Reagan: el control a las armas en manos de civiles, el d\u00e9ficit fiscal y la enorme brecha que se abr\u00eda entre los ricos y la clase media. Los anuncios trataron de que los americanos dejaran de mirar la prosperidad coyuntural y dirigieran sus ojos al horizonte en donde se ve\u00edan oscuros nubarrones. El mensaje no llego. La gente estaba feliz con la prosperidad que ve\u00eda y no estaba interesada en las aves de mal ag\u00fcero. Los intentos de Mondale por visualizar los rostros de la guerra, como soldados en ata\u00fades o campos de guerra, no llegaron al ciudadano pues confiaba en el liderazgo militar que Reagan le hab\u00eda impreso al pa\u00eds. Los anuncios de Mondale nunca supieron construir una alternativa de comunicaci\u00f3n que compitiera con la visi\u00f3n de Reagan. El resultado fue una derrota estruendosa: Mondale solo gan\u00f3 en un Estado. Reagan consigui\u00f3 525 votos electorales y Mondale solo 13. El spot que vemos tiene el siguiente gui\u00f3n en ingles: JOHN F. KENNEDY: Man may no longer pretend that the quest for disarmament is a sign of weakness. For in a spiraling arms race, a nation&#8217;s security may be shrinking even as its arms increase. NARRADOR: John F. Kennedy knew that it took strength and vision to control nuclear weapons. He turned this important idea into action in 1963 by signing the Atmospheric Test Ban Treaty with the Soviets. Four later, presidents signed fifteen arms agreements with the Russians but Ronald Reagan opposed them, proposing always to build more. With 7,000 new nuclear weapons in four years, Reagan now plans to take the arms race into space, an irretrievable step&#8211;preparing for Star Wars&#8211;not knowing where it will lead. REAGAN: When you keep, keep Star Warring it, I never suggested where the weapons should be or what kind. I&#8217;m not a scientist. MONDALE: Well that&#8217;s what a president is supposed to know: where those weapons are going to be. If they&#8217;re space weapons, I assume they&#8217;ll be in space. NARRADOR: That&#8217;s exactly where they&#8217;ll be. Killer weapons in space, layer upon layer, orbiting, with a response time so short, there will be no time to wake a president. Kennedy&#8217;s hotline will be obsolete. Computers will take control. The cost, a trillion dollars. And Reagan plans to turn over the technology to the Russians. Mondale won&#8217;t. MONDALE: I don&#8217;t believe this administration understands how most Americans feel about arms control. We know that if those bombs go off, that&#8217;s probably the end, it&#8217;s over. We&#8217;re the first generation to have the capacity to destroy all life. And that&#8217;s why this is not just another problem&#8211;it&#8217;s THE problem. I&#8217;ve been involved in every arms control fight over twenty years. I know what I&#8217;m doing. I&#8217;ve dealt with the Soviets. I&#8217;ve worked with our friends. I know how to get arms control. We must have that kind of leadership in the White House. NARRADOR: And that&#8217;s the kind of leadership you&#8217;ll get with Mondale, an army man, senator on the National Security Council, vice president. He knows the world for the tough place it is. That we need a growing strong defense, state of the art conventional weapons on land and sea. He also knows, like Jack Kennedy, that we must deal with the Russians from strength. A steady hand, a savvy negotiator, he&#8217;s ready to take on the negotiations that will stop weapons in space.
