El Presidente en ejercicio, Bush, contaba con altos niveles de favorabilidad, fruto, entre otras cosas de la contundente victoria militar en la operaci\u00f3n \u201cTormenta del Desierto\u201d en 1991. No es extra\u00f1o entonces que muchos dem\u00f3cratas de peso no quisieran medirse con el Presidente, evitando, as\u00ed, lo sucedido a Water Mondale con Reagan, es decir, una paliza de votos. Los dem\u00f3cratas terminaron eligiendo como candidato a Bill Clinton, el desconocido gobernador de Arkansas. Clinton, con muy buen criterio, no se dejo meter en el tema de la guerra, los peligros para Norteam\u00e9rica o el poder\u00edo militar reconquistado por Reagan y Bush y centr\u00f3 su mensaje en la econom\u00eda. De ah\u00ed el famoso \u201cEs la econom\u00eda, entupido!\u201d. Los republicanos trataron de evidenciar sus \u00e9xitos en pol\u00edtica exterior que hab\u00edan terminado con el escenario geopol\u00edtico que dio origen a la guerra fr\u00eda. El \u00e9nfasis econ\u00f3mico se vio apuntalado por la presencia del candidato Ross Perot, un empresario multimillonario, que centr\u00f3 su discurso en la econom\u00eda y el d\u00e9ficit fiscal. El independiente, quiz\u00e1s sin darse cuenta, ayudo a posicionar el tema que les dar\u00eda el triunfo a los dem\u00f3cratas. El spot que vemos tiene el siguiente gui\u00f3n en ingles: PEROT: Pretty simply: who&#8217;s the best qualified person up here on the stage to create jobs? Make your decision and vote on November the third. I suggest you might consider somebody who&#8217;s created jobs. Second: who&#8217;s the best person to manage money? I suggest you pick a person who&#8217;s successfully managed money. Who&#8217;s the best person to get results, and not talk? Look at the record, and make your decision. And, finally, who would you give your pension fund and your savings to to manage? And the last one: Who would you ask to be the trustee of your estate and take care of your children if something happened to you? Finally, to you students up there: God bless you. I&#8217;m doing this for you. I want you to have the American dream. And to the American people &#8211; to the American people &#8211; I&#8217;m doing this because I love you. That&#8217;s it.
