La opini\u00f3n se encontraba desencantada. La popularidad de Nixon bajaba por el desgaste de la administraci\u00f3n como consecuencia de la guerra de Vietnam. Adicionalmente la situaci\u00f3n econ\u00f3mica no era prometedora, la inflaci\u00f3n sub\u00eda y el desempleo aumentaba. La administraci\u00f3n trataba de tomar medidas que subieran su favorabilidad: viajo por primera vez a China y Rusia, trat\u00f3 de terminar el conflicto en Vietnam con el bombardeo de Hanoi y control\u00f3 precios y salarios. George McGovern, el adversario de Nixon, difund\u00eda un mensaje arcado por el pacifismo tratando de capitalizar el descontento de la poblaci\u00f3n con la guerra. Su campa\u00f1a cometi\u00f3 algunos errores graves como el nombramiento del Senador de Missouri Thomas Eagleton como compa\u00f1ero de formula para luego retirarlo por el descubrimiento de que el Senador hab\u00eda recibido tratamiento contra la depresi\u00f3n, tratamiento que inclu\u00eda terapia de choques el\u00e9ctricos. Esos errores los aprovechaba con habilidad la campa\u00f1a de Nixon para mostrar a un McGovern inepto y apresurado. El slogan de campa\u00f1a era: \u201cNixon Presidente, ahora m\u00e1s que nunca\u201d. El instrumento de su campa\u00f1a fue la televisi\u00f3n. Los spot comunicaban el liderazgo de Nixon y el liberalismo imprudente de McGovern. Las piezas que posicionaban mensajes positivos mostraban a Nixon en ceremonias de Estado, con lideres del mundo y trabajando en la oficina oval. La idea era mostrar a un l\u00edder que estaba en capacidad de sacar el barco de la tormenta. El formato de documental gener\u00f3 un ambiente de intimidad del espectador con las rutinas presidenciales, propiciando un sentimiento de conexi\u00f3n muy favorable a la aspiraci\u00f3n republicana. As\u00ed mismo se humanizo la figura de Nixon, que era percibido como fr\u00edo, sin sentido del humor y distante, por eso hay spot donde lo muestran en el piano con Duke Ellington, bailando con su hija y bromeando con los traductores durante su viaje a China. Sin embargo, y hay que decirlo con claridad, su mejor comunicaci\u00f3n es aquella en donde ataca a su adversario. Muchas de las piezas negativas las pautaba un grupo denominado \u201cDem\u00f3cratas con Nixon\u201d, pero era la campa\u00f1a de Nixon la que lo hacia abajo ese parapeto. Los spot fueron producidos por el denominado \u201cNovember Group\u201d, un grupo liderado por Peter Dailey y del cual hac\u00edan parte tambi\u00e9n Phil Joanou de la Agencia Doyle Dane Bernbach y William Taylor de Ogilvy and Mather. El spot que vemos tiene el siguiente gui\u00f3n en ingles: NARRADOR: Moscow. May, 1972. Richard Nixon becomes the first American president ever to visit the Russian capitol. The historic five-day trip proves to be a working visit, where firm agreements are formed between the two great powers. Late in the week, the Russian government provides President Nixon with a unique opportunity: a chance to report on this progress directly to the Russian people on live television. NIXON: We have agreed on joint ventures in space. We have agreed on ways of working together to protect the environment, to advance health, to cooperate in science and technology. We have agreed on means of preventing incidents at sea. We have established a commission to expand trade between our two nations. Most important, we have taken an historic first step in the limitation of nuclear strategic arms. NARRADOR: The agreements do not come easily. President Nixon, Secretary Rodgers, and Doctor Kissinger spend long hours hammering out terms that are equal for both countries and beneficial to all countries. In his TV address, the President speaks to the Russians about the American people. NIXON: In many ways, the people of our two countries are very much alike. Like the Soviet Union, ours is a large and diverse nation. Our people, like yours, are hardworking. Like you, we Americans have a strong spirit of competition. But we also have a great love of music and poetry and sports. Above all, we, like you, are an open, natural, and friendly people. We love our country. We love our children. And we want for you, and your children, the same peace and abundance that we want for ourselves and our children. NARRADOR: Earlier in the week, President and Mrs. Nixon traveled to Leningrad, where they walked through Pavloft, the ancient residence of the tsars. In Kiev, they visited the Cathedral of St. Sofia. And in Moscow, Mrs. Nixon is entertained by the famous Russian circus. In Leningrad, President Nixon visits the Piskalov cemetery, and he recalls that experience in his TV address. NIXON: Yesterday I lay a wreath at the cemetery which commemorates the brave people who died at the siege of Leningrad in World War II. At the cemetery I saw a picture of a 12-year-old girl. She was a beautiful child. Her name was Tanya. The pages of her diary tell the terrible story of war. In the simple words of a child, she wrote about the deaths of her family. Zenya in December. Granny in January. Leka, then uncle Vasya, then Uncle Lyosha, then mama. And then, finally, these words, the last words in her diary: \u00abAll are dead. Only Tanya is left.\u00bb As we work hard on our peaceful world, let us think of Tanya, and all of the other Tanyas, and their brothers and sisters everywhere. Let us do all we can to ensure that no other children will have to endure what Tanya did, and that your children and ours, all the children of the world, can live their full lives together in friendship and in peace.
