La econom\u00eda estaba fuerte y la pol\u00edtica exterior mostraba un liderazgo claro y ponderado que se traduc\u00eda el m\u00e1s comercio y menos guerras. Clinton volv\u00eda a encarnar el sue\u00f1o dem\u00f3crata. El Congreso era dominado por los republicanos desde 1994 y desde ah\u00ed impulsaban una agenda conservadora cuyo vocero era Newt Gingrich y que fue bautizada como \u201cEl Contrato con Am\u00e9rica\u201d. En la discusi\u00f3n por la aprobaci\u00f3n del presupuesto el gobierno federal fue cerrado dos veces por falta de recursos en una jugada en donde Clinton se ubicaba en el centro y pon\u00eda a los republicanos como unos extremistas que estaban dispuestos a todo. La campa\u00f1a dem\u00f3crata no se canso se mostrar el vinculo entre Gingrich y Bob Dole, la campa\u00f1a de Dole trato de mostrar las condiciones de \u201cHombre Decente\u201d del republicano, pero sin que el mensaje calara mucho en una ciudadan\u00eda que se sent\u00eda bien con lo que hab\u00eda. Por eso esc\u00e1ndalos como los de \u201cWhitewater\u201d, \u201cFilegate\u201d, \u201cTravelgate\u201d o los alegatos en torno a los abusos en la financiaci\u00f3n de la campa\u00f1a con arrendamientos de habitaciones de la Casa Blanca. El slogan de campa\u00f1a era \u201cConstruyendo un puente al siglo 21\u201d. La estrategia dem\u00f3crata estuvo dirigida a desgastar la imagen de Dole por su pertenencia al Partido Republicano. No se cansaron de asociar a Dole con Newt Gingrich. Un partido que no ten\u00eda reparo en recortar los programas sociales y asistenciales. En contraste se mostraban los avances y el compromiso social de la administraci\u00f3n Clinton, dejando entrever el riesgo que corr\u00edan si sub\u00edan al poder los republicanos. Clinton no tuvo reparo en tomar algunas banderas conservadoras como suyas y defendi\u00f3 la pena de muerte y el recorte de algunos programas asistenciales. Los instrumentos de persuasi\u00f3n dise\u00f1ados mostraban los avances y la vitalidad del gobierno mientras marcaban la avanzada edad de Dole y su falta de energ\u00eda para mantener el impulso que llevaba la naci\u00f3n. Clinton fue reelecto con el 49.2% contra el 40.7% de Dole.
